I studied cruises — the costs, ports of call, different cruise lines, amenities, and so forth. I longed to do the New England and Canada cruise, but the price was steeper than the cruises I typically took. Finally, in 2019, I took this dream cruise with Holland America. Holland America Line has lined up a pretty spectacular 2025 Canada and New England Season, packed with an exciting array of offerings. This season will include brand-new voyages, visits to several new ports, plus a fascinating 25-day journey around Greenland and Iceland. The one-way sailing travels from New York to Montreal (or vice versa, with overnights in each city), and the ships visit Quebec City, Saguenay and Gaspe in Quebec; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Boston.

This agriculture isle featured apple orchards and pumpkin fields. Honestly, it reminded us of the western part of our home state. As a bonus, this was really the first time we saw any fall foliage during the trip.

Up at 7 am, the weather outside was rather gray and gloomy again. In fact, it would remain mostly overcast for the whole day. Unfortunately, we were not close enough to land for our mobile internet to work either. In the World Stage, there was the BBC Earth’s Seven Worlds One Planet. This immersive show includes footage from the BBC Earth series, accompanied by the orchestra from the Lincoln Center Stage.

Upon returning to the ship, we connected with our friend for one final dinner in the main dining room around 7 pm. Our final stop of the tour was near the Le Château Frontenac hotel where we had about 40 minutes of free time. A second big stop on the excursion was Fairview Lawn Cemetery, hallowed ground and the final resting place for 100+ passengers from the sunken Titanic. I arrived a day early to ensure no flight interruptions, so I had a day and a half before boarding my cruise, giving me time to see the metropolitan city. We strolled along the Saint Lawrence River, toured the gardens, and watched a historical reenactment at Chateau Ramezay, a National Historic Site of Canada. I began cruising whenever I could afford it and could take time away from work.

The drive to the airport and the remainder of the day were pretty uneventful. With both flights departing on time, we were finally home around 6 pm.

Our group had dinner reservations at 7 pm at the most upscale venue on the ship, the Pinnacle Grill. This American-style steakhouse is home to several stellar menu options. Following our quick bite, we returned to the room to do some work for the remainder of the afternoon and prepare for the first “formal night” of the cruise.

Now, we had just under 2 weeks at home before our next trip. Soon, we will be heading back out on Norwegian Prima for 4 more fun-filled days on this new Norwegian Cruise Line ship. The delay in our arrival time meant our tour was also delayed until 1 pm. While the tour was still visiting the main attractions, the included lunch portion was cancelled as a result. Further, burger lovers will want to dive into the burgers and fries at the Dive-In. There’s also the New York Pizza and Deli, which dishes out hot sandwiches and specialty pies. Another popular venue is the Grand Dutch Cafe, serving Norwegian specialties throughout the day along with the brand’s signature coffee blend. Holland America’s buffet, the Lido Marketplace, is among the best at sea. With several themed stations for lunch and dinner, the venue serves up always well-prepared options.

Getting to dine with multiple people means we can order several things. But first, the signature drinks at Tamarind are among the most popular on the ship. With our Wasabi and Far East Legacy cocktails in hand, it was time to dive into some food selections.

All cabins are spacious ocean-facing suites, and 90% of the ships' accommodations feature a veranda. The ships might be small, but they still offer four onboard restaurants, including the line's new Mediterranean restaurant, Solis. Liberty of the Seas doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Royal Caribbean's newer, larger ships. It also boasts an adults-only, indoor Solarium pool and several outdoor pools and hot tubs.

These vessels offer scenic cruises along the St. Lawrence River as well, with stops in Montréal and Québec City on most itineraries — adding a bit of culture to all that natural splendor.
